At present Infinity PC frameworks use a concentrated database framework with social database design to store information. The focal database framework is situated in Colombo head office branch. Colombo, Mumbai and Kandy branches get to the database progressively through the organization WAN in everyday tasks. The database framework comprises of following significant tables which are identified with other sub tables. Territories Where Current System Lacks Security Current WAN system has an immense security opening as none of the site is ensured by a firewall. This permits programmers and other malware projects, for example, worms to enter in to the system effectively and it represent an incredible danger to the information very still just as those which are going on the system. The present framework doesn't utilize any sort of encryption while moving information between remote locales and the fundamental site. This represent an extraordinary danger for information, for example, Passwords and usernames as client validation is done at the fundamental site (Colombo) instead of the nearby locales. Absence of encryption implies, any individual who block information get the entrance to client confirmation data. Besides, the nonappearance of encryption represent a risk to other information that moved among principle and remote destinations as results for use inquiries. Since organization database stores information that is fundamental and private to Infinity PC frameworks. Client confirmation arrangement of the present database framework has not exactly sufficient validation component which award access to all territories of the database framework with single purpose of verification. This represent a risk to information as staff of the organization with all degrees of position have the simple access to practically the entirety of the organization information. Arrangement To conquer the issues right now looked by Infinity Computer frameworks, a dispersed database framework can be actualized. In a dispersed database condition, database is circulated over numerous areas where end clients have speedy access. Arrangement and preferences of the new database framework will be depicted in the following part. Section 2 Distributed Database Appropriated database is an assortment of numerous, consistently interrelated databases circulated over a PC arrange. In a conveyed database condition, clients can get to information from various sources that are situated at numerous areas. At the point when a database is conveyed over numerous areas, it delivers the test of recovering the information from numerous areas and present it to framework client. Besides dealing with the database turns into a basic capacity also. This is the place conveyed database the executives framework (DBMS) comes in to play. DBMS is a product framework that deals with the Distributed Database and gives the entrance component to the clients of the database. By firmly incorporating with different frameworks and databases in an appropriated domain, DBMS make the conveyance straightforward to the client. Endlessness Computer Systems Distributed Database Overview Contingent upon the current land conveyance of the branches and the WAN engineering, Infinity Computer Systems database can be circulated in to three branches to augment the efficiency and access times just as acquiring numerous different points of interest over existing brought together database. Out of numerous accessible, There are two significant sorts of database plan models we can consider when planning our organization database framework. They are, Different Site Processing, Multiple Site Data engineering utilizing either Homogenous or Heterogeneous Dispersed Database Management Systems(DDBMS). Out of over two structures we will execute Homogenous Multiple Site Processing, Multiple Site Data engineering for Infinity Computer Systems appropriated database. A dispersed Different Site Processing, Multiple Site Data Different Site Processing, Multiple Site Data (MPMD) situation alludes to kind of database that is completely dispersed with various information processor bolster which incorporates exchange processors at numerous locales. At the point when all the locales of the coherently related appropriated database use and incorporates a similar kind of Database Management System(DBMS) at all destinations of the circulated organize its called Homogenous DBMS. Boundlessness Computer Systems Distributed Database Architecture Consolidating the ideas depicted above new appropriated database design of the organization can be shown as beneath. As appeared in the figure 4 and 5 in the new design, Both Mumbai and Kandy branches will keep up a duplicate of the database that comprising of records identified with their separate branches. Colombo branch will keep up two databases. one incorporates information identified with Colombo branch and a principle database which will hold records identified with every one of the three branches. The new disseminated database utilize social database engineering. With this new design each branch will get the capacity to get to their own one of a kind database which is found locally. With this execution, handling of the information additionally will be decentralized to every one of the three branches. Aside from getting to the privately found database, both Kandy and Mumbai branches will have the option to get to the primary database that is situated in Colombo head office. The appropriated database the executives framework (DDBMS) will comprise of Distributed Query Processor(DQP), that handles disseminated questions, a Distributed Transaction Supervisor (DTM) for handling conveyed exchanges, a Distributed Metadata Manager (DMM) for overseeing circulated metadata, a Distributed Integrity Manger (DIM) for upholding uprightness among the different segments of the disseminated database framework and a Distributed Security Manager (DSM) for implementing security limitations over the database. LANs of every one of the three branches were

List of Elements in the Lathanide Group
The lanthanides or lanthanoid series is a group of transition metals located on the periodic table in the first row (period) below the main body of the table. The lanthanides are commonly referred to as the rare earth elements (REE), although many people group scandium and yttrium together under this label as well. Therefore, its less confusing to call the lanthanides a subset of the rare earth metals. The Lanthanides Heres a list of the 15 elements that are lanthanides, which run from atomic number 57 (lanthanum, or Ln) and 71 (lutetium, or Lu): Lanthanum: symbol Ln, atomic number 57Cerium: symbol Ce, atomic number 58Praseodymium: symbol Pr, atomic number 59Neodymium: symbol Nd, atomic number 60Promethium: symbol Pm, atomic number 61Samarium: symbol Sm, atomic number 62Europium: symbol Eu, atomic number 63Gadolinium: symbol Gd, atomic number 64Terbium: symbol Tb, atomic number 65Dysprosium: symbol Dy, atomic number 66Holmium: symbol Ho, atomic number 67Erbium: symbol Er, atomic number 68Thulium: symbol Tm, atomic number 69Ytterbium: symbol Yb, atomic number 70Lutetium: symbol Lu, atomic number 71 Note that sometimes lanthanides are considered to be the elements following lanthanum on the periodic table, making it a group of 14 elements. Some references also exclude lutetium from the group because it has a single valence electron in the 5d shell. Properties of the Lanthanides Because the lanthanides are all transition metals, these elements share common characteristics. In pure form, they are bright, metallic, and silvery in appearance. The most common oxidation state for most of these elements is 3, although 2 and 4 are also generally stable. Because they can have a variety of oxidation states, they tend to form brightly colored complexes. Lanthanides are reactiveââ¬âreadily forming ionic compounds with other elements. For instance, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and europium react with oxygen to form oxide coatings or tarnish after brief exposure to air. Because of their reactivity, pure lanthanides are stored in an inert atmosphere, such as argon, or kept under mineral oil. Unlike other most other transition metals, the lanthanides tend to be soft, sometimes to the point where they can be cut with a knife. Additionally, none of the elements occurs free in nature. When moving across the periodic table, the radius of the 3 ion of each successive element decreases; this phenomenon is called lanthanide contraction. With the exception of lutetium, all of the lanthanide elements are f-block elements, referring to the filling of the 4f electron shell. Although lutetium is a d-block element, its usually considered a lanthanide because it shares so many chemical properties with the other elements in the group. Surprisingly, even though the elements are called rare earth elements, they arent particularly scarce in nature. However, its difficult and time-consuming to isolate them from each other from their ores, adding to their value. Lastly, lanthanides are valued for their use in electronics, particularly television and monitor displays. They are also used in lighters, lasers, and superconductors, and to color glass, make materials phosphorescent, and even control nuclear reactions. A Note About Notation The chemical symbol Ln may be used to refer to any lanthanide in general, not specifically the element lanthanum. This may be confusing, especially in situations where lanthanum itself isnt considered a member of the group!

Proceed-Precede Model - 769 Words
The PRECEDE-PROCEED model is a medical model that moves away from the typical issue of disease treatment and focuses on health promotion. Developed by Lawrence W. Green, this model has been applied in many Western countries in the improvement of health. PRECEDE (Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation) is the part of the model that helps in the development of various public health initiatives and programs. PROCEED (Policy, Regulatory, and Organizational Constructs in Educational and Environmental Development), on the other hand, serves as a guide to the effective implementation of the various programs that are created using PRECEDE. The fifth phase is known as the administrative and policy assessment phase and involves determining which health promotion programs would best address the needs that have already been identified in the previous phases and bring about the desired changes in behaviors and factors already identified. The PROCEED part of the model begins at phase six which is the implementation phase where the interventions that are agreed upon at stage five are put into action. In this case, this could be a class for school-aged children and their parents, a continuous program for children alone, or even an on-going event for the parents. Whatever the choice of educational program it is, it is important to note that phases one through five must be taken into full consideration to ensure that no needs or issues are left unaddressed when the program is finally implemented. Corporate Finance Companies and Business
Question: Discuss about the Corporate Finance for Companies and Business. Answer: Introduction Companies and business entities apply several methods to measure their performance in the market. One of the methods commonly used by corporations is the financial analysis where several techniques are used to examine the companys past and present performance and project its future trend. Financial analyses help firms to identify their strengths and weaknesses in the industry. They then focus on either maximizing the internal strengths by taking advantage of the external opportunities or minimizing the internal weaknesses through mitigating the external threats. Car Ab Ltd is one of such companies. Car Ab Ltd specializes in supplying automotive components in the industry. The company has developed an excellent reputation and brand by proving quality products and reputable services. Car Aib Ltd has created business objectives which emphasize on customer-oriented services. However, the organization is currently facing fierce competition in the industry arising from market saturation. This paper focuses on evaluating the companys comparative financial performance during the 2014 and 2015 fiscal years. Some of the financial performance indicators to be analysed are; a) evolution of the working capital and capital employed; b) the cash-flow statement; c) the financial leverage and the Return On Equity; and d) the financial leverage and the Return On Equity. Finally, a brief comment, conclusion, and recommendation will be provided based on the results obtained from the financial analysis. Note: the companys comparative balance sheet and income statement for the financial years 2014 and 2015 were provided and had been used in the respective financial performance indicator. It shows that ability of the business to meet its short-term financial obligations (Blocher, et al., 2009, p. 198). A firm should have a positive working capital to fund sufficiently its short-term debts nearing maturity, finance its operational expenses and continue with its daily operations. A negative working capital means that the firm cannot meet its daily operations, fund its upcoming expenses or operate sufficiently (Horngren Sundem, 2013, p. 45). Car Ab Ltd had a negative working capital both in 2014 and 2015. Its working capital reduced further from negative (- 1904) in 2014 to negative (-3566) in 2015. Conversely, the working capital(days of sales ) which shows the number of days it takes the customers to clear their credit sales by the company increased further from negative(12) in 2014 to negative (22) in 2015 (Gleim, 2001, p. 61). The reduced working capital was attributed to the increased amount of inventories from 5,800 in 2014 to 6,913 in 2015 and increased amount of credit sales i.e. payables from 8,845 in 2014 to 10,600 in 2015. A number of other liabilities also rose from 4839 in 2014 to 6170 in 2015. In 2014, it took customers 24 days to clear their debts. However, the number increased to 39 in 2015. It is important to note that the receivables account rose from 6,080 in 2014 to 6,291 in 2015 ( Cheffi Beldi, 2012, p. 94). With a more negative working capital and working capital in days on sales, Car Ab Ltd is not in the position to meet its short-term financial and operational obligations. The capital employed Capital Employed End of 2015 End of 2014 Fixed Assets 22545 20722 Working Capital -3566 -1904 Capital Employed 18979 18818 Equity 14590 14718 Net Debt 4389 4100 Capital Employed 18979 18818 Brief Analysis Capital employed refers to the total amount of capital invested in acquiring revenue. The Car Ab Ltd.s capital employed decreased by $ 161 from $ 18818 in 2014 to 18979 in 2015. Fixed assets increased from 20,722 in 2014 to 22,545 in 2015. The reduction experienced in the operating capital was contributed by significant reduction of the working capital as stated above (Ittelson, 2009, p. 54). Conversely, net debts investments increased significantly by $289 from $4100 in 2014 to $4389 in 2015 while Equity investments decreased from 14,717 in 2015 to 14,590 in 2015. The information shows that the companys shareholders demanded to be paid more dividends leaving the company with less amount to invest (Tracy, 2012, p. 89). To enhance its growth regarding operational performance, and increased revenues, the management should increase the capital employed by reducing the amount of bonus and dividends payable to shareholders as well as look for other methods of funding its projects besides debts. For instance, the company should authorize the sale of more common shares to the public through Initial Public Offering (IPO) ( Hoyle, et al., 2012, p. 187). Build the cash-flow statement The Car Ab Ltd cash flow statement for the year 2015 is calculated as shown below; Cash Flow Statement 2015 Net Income 812 Depreciation 415 Change in Working Capital -1662 Operating Cash Flow 2889 Less: Investment Expenses 2238 Free Cash Flow 651 Add: Capital Increase 0 Less: Dividends 940 Add: Change in borrowing 1374 Change in Cash 1085 Brief Analysis The company had a free cash flow of 651 after investment expenses had been deducted. The free cash flow was also affected by the adverse change in working capital and positive changes in the fixed asset depreciation (Ross, 2010, p. 145). Part of the free cash flow was used to pay dividends to the shareholders (940) and paying part of the company debt capital (1374) However; it should be noted that the company did not increase its equity/ capital investment from the income. The change in cash and cash equivalents increased by 963 at the end of 2015 ( Kieso , et al., 2011, p. 46). Analyse the operating performance (ROCE) Operating Performance 2015 2014 Effective Tax Rate 0.35 0.32 ROCE (Before Tax) 0.0923 0.125 ROCE (After Tax) 0.06 0.085 Operating Margin (B4 Tax) 0.0297 0.04 Operating Margin (After Tax) 0.0193 0.027 Capital Employed Turnover 3.11 3.1 Brief Analysis The companys ROCE before tax decreased from 9.23% in 2014 to 12.5% in 2015. The change shows the company ineffectiveness in controlling its growth. The companys operating margin decreased from 4.02% to 2.97% before and 2.7% in 2014 to 1.93% in 2015 after tax (Kelly Barrow , 2016, p. 121). The deterioration of the companys operating performance was majorly contributed by the decreased of capital employed in investments. However, the company made efficient use of its operating capital as shown in the Capital Employed turnover. The ratio progressed slightly from 3.1 in 2014 to 3.11 in 2015 (Byrne, 2012, p. 46). Assess the financial leverage and the Return On Equity ROE Financial Leverage 2015 2014 Return on Equity 0.056 0.087 Effective Cost of Debt 503 459 Kd 0.1147 0.112 Gearing 0.3008 0.279 Financial Leverage -0.0043 0.0024 Brief Analysis: Just like the reduction of the ROCE after tax, the Return on Equity dropped from 8.72% in 2014 to 5.7% in 2015. The effective cost of debt increased from 459 in 2014 to 503 in 2015. Poor ROE returns resulted from the rising cost of debt and negative financial leverages. For the gearing percentage, it can be revealed that the company reduced its dependency on debt to fund its investment and operational; activities. In 2014, gearing stood at 30.08% but decreased to 27.9% in 2015. The ROE and financial Leverage analysis shows that the company is performing poorly as far as its investments are concerned (Kaplan, 2012, p. 287). Assess solvency and liquidity Solvency and Liquidity 2015 2014 Gearing 0.3 0.279 Net Debt / Operating cash flow 1.52 - Current Ratio * 0.94 1.01 Quick Ratio * 0.58 0.64 Cash Ratio * 0.26 0.26 Brief Analysis The company has no issue with solvency. The gearing percentage (i.e. the extent of which debt versus equity funds the company's operations) decreased from 30% in 2014 to 27.9% in 2015. Likewise, in 2015, 15.2% of the operating cash flow came from net debts. Therefore, the creditors should be a bit worried (Michael, 2012, p. 18). The liquidity ratios are very low, and the company is not in the position to meet its daily financial obligations. The current ratio, which shows the ability of an organization to fund its day-to-day operation using current liability decreased from 1.01 in 2014 to 0.94 in 2015. Likewise, the quick ratio, which is obtained by dividing current assets minus inventories by current liabilities reduced from 0.64 in 2014 to 0.58 in 2015 (Michael Pizzica, 2015, p.122). However cash ratio, which is the amount of cash and cash equivalents an organization has against current liabilities, remained constant between the two periods. brief summary with your comments and recommendations on the financial situation and performance of the company The Car Ab Ltd is not competitive in the market based on the financial analysis conducted above. The company has failed to control its operations efficiently and is also faced with liquidity issues. The number of days it takes the customers to clear their credit sales by the company increased during the 2015 financial period (Proctor, 2012, p. 97). Therefore, during the days of the sales period, the company is not in a position to meet its short-term financial obligation. The management should introduce policies aimed at reducing the number of days the customers are possible to stay with the companys debts. For example by introducing discounts and bonuses on cash sales, many customers will strive to go cash purchases to have the discounts stated (Simons, 2013, p. 154). Likewise, introducing a policy where credit customers are offered discounted for clearing their debts within ten days following the sales would increase cash collections. Second, the company has an ineffective internal control system. This has been revealed by increase on the number of stocks in the companys warehouse at the end of 2015. Likewise. The number of liabilities also increased. It would be expected that with the number of increased ordering of stock, the companys cash and cash equivalents would have increased significantly ( Horngren , et al., 2011, p. 67). There is a possibility of growing number of dead stock. The company should introduce an effective internal control system to reduce the stock being held in the warehouse. For example, the management should offer discounts on large purchases. Second, the company should use the ABC stock ordering method. The shareholders demanded to be paid dividends even with the poor organizational performance, therefore, escalating the level of financial risk facing the company. Payment of dividends limited the companys ability for further growth or investment. The gearing percentage shows that the company depends on mostly on debts to fund its operations (Vaughn, 2007, p. 150). Low level of equity capital can only mean that the shareholders have lost their trust on the management to maximize the value of their funds. Things are likely to worsen when the bank and other financial institutions cannot give the company loans to run its activities. With the current financial trend, the organization is heading to insolvency (Gibson, 2008, p. 211). The liquidity ratio also shows that the firm is facing adverse short-term liquidity problems. First, from the current ratio it has been revealed that the company lacks enough current assets to meet its daily obligations. In 2015, the company only had 0.94 in current assets to pay for my dollar owed to the creditors (Tracy, 2012, p. 108). Second, the quick ratio was even whose with only o.58 dollars to pay for a single dollar owed to the creditors. With the current situation, the company is not in a position to expand its market share, invest more capital, meet both its short-term and long-term financial obligations and compete in the market (Guenther, 2004, p. 303). Conclusion Car Ab Ltd is in a financial crisis, and there is a lot to be done to save the company from insolvency. The management should strive to gain shareholders trust and influence them to invest more money in the company. References List Cheffi, . W. Beldi, A., 2012. Election 2000 Essays - Political Parties In The United States
Election 2000 Election 2000 overview Presidential election cycles are always three-ring circuses, and the 2000 election has become one of the biggest circuses ever. With a two-term president unable to seek re-election, the House of Representatives clearly up for grabs, and Democrats counting on major Senate gains -- even hoping to win control -- there is a lot at stake in this year's elections. Republicans' optimism is based on their view that they will take back the White House after an eight-year hiatus. GOP insiders believe that Americans are tired of Bill Clinton, have doubts about Vice President Al Gore and are ready for change. Republican turnout was down in 1998, which helps account for the party's poor showing in the off-year elections. And even the most loyal Republican will agree that the party's recent presidential nominees, Bob Dole and former President George Herbert Walker Bush (in 1992), failed to excite Republicans and Independents. GOP strategists think that strength at the top of the ticket in 2000 wil l help all Republican candidates. Democrats have reasons to worry about the presidential race. While Republicans held the White House for three consecutive terms from 1980 to 1992, voters often grow tired of one party after two terms. Ethics questions and controversies involving Clinton and Gore have also given Republicans ammunition. And recent history isn't with the Democrats. Only four sitting vice presidents -- John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren and George Bush -- were elected directly to the presidency in the entire history of the nation. Al Gore is hoping to make it five. The GOP presidential nominee, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, recovered after a shaky start during the primary season and tried to establish education as his most important issue. Surveys throughout the summer showed him with an early lead, which grew dramatically just before the GOP's national convention. Those same polls showed voters gave him high marks on his ability to handle key issues, including traditional Democratic ones such a s health care, education and Social Security. Even more important, those same polls showed him with a significant advantage over the vice president in the area of leadership. But Gore changed all that with his performance on the last day of the Democrats' Los Angeles national convention. Whether it was the highly publicized kiss he gave his wife, Tipper, or his fiery, populist speech, Gore changed the public's view of him. No longer was he a political opportunist or stiff second banana. Instead, he was a passionate, loving father and husband who lacked many of Clinton's weaknesses. Public sentiment turned on a dime. Instead of being down double-digits in the polls, as he was going into the Democratic convention, Gore jumped a few points ahead of Bush. Gore's luck didn't change when he left California. He and his running mate, Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, began a whirlwind campaign swing, with Lieberman -- the highly regarded Orthodox Jew and critic of the president's personal behavior -- vouching for Gore's integrity, morality and sincerity. Gore's selection of Lieberman was regarded as a bold move. While some liberals and African Americans in the Democratic Party complained about the senator's moderate stands, Lieberman reiterated his support for the Gore agenda and helped the Vice President re-introduce himself to the country. At the same time, Bush's running mate, former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, was fanning the fuels of controversy by delaying a decision about what he would do with certain Halliburton stock options, and Bush was floundering when asked about his tax cut plan and about his charge that the U.S. military was not fully ready. While Gore looked relaxed and energetic, Bush made mistakes, including miscalculating how the debate over debates would play, a much publicized gaffe in front of an open microphone, and his mispronunciation of the word subliminal. Post-Labor Day polls suggested that Gore surged ahead of Bush by at least a few points. Republicans became much less optimistic about Bush than they were in July, while Democrats, who started to wonder about Gore's electability, turned increasingly hopeful. But the race turned again before the end of September, when Bush went on two popular daytime television shows and Gore was hit by the media and his GOP opponents

How to Reference an Edited Book â⬠APA Style
How to Reference an Edited Book ââ¬â APA Style How to Reference an Edited Book ââ¬â APA Style Even if youââ¬â¢re familiar with the basics of the American Psychological Society (APA) style guide, referencing different source types can be tricky to master. But since clear and consistent referencing is essential to academic writing, this isnââ¬â¢t something you can ignore. Having a professional check your work is one way to ensure that nothing goes awry with your citations. Herein we offer a little advice on how to reference edited volumes using APA style. APA Style and Edited Volumes The APA system is commonly used for academic texts in the social sciences. A general authorââ¬âdate format is utilized for in-text citations, with full publication details included in an alphabetically ordered reference list at the end of your paper. Referencing edited books, such as collected volumes of essays, differs from referencing other printed books when using APA style citations. Citing a Chapter The information required when citing a single chapter from an edited volume is as follows: Author Name, Initial(s). (Year). Title of chapter. In Editor Name (Ed.), Title of book (page numbers). Place of Publication: Publisher. For instance, this would look something like the following: Author, A. (2007). My essay. In A. N. Editor (Ed.), Editing a collection: Adventures in anthologies (pp. 6-12). New York: PMP Publications. Its important to note that it is the author you cite in the main text of your paper when referencing a single chapter. Citing a Whole Book When citing the volume as a whole, the editorââ¬â¢s name and initials should be included in place of the authorââ¬â¢s: Editorââ¬â¢s Surname, Initial(s). (Ed.) (Year). Title: Subtitle. Place of publication: Publisher. The abbreviation ââ¬Å"(Ed.)â⬠is included in parentheses to indicate that this is an edited volume. In the reference list, this would appear as: Editor, A. N. (Ed.) (2007). Editing a collection: Adventures in anthologies. New York: PMP Publications. A text with two or more editors simply requires that you include all of the editorsââ¬â¢ names in the reference. Editor, A. N., Compiler, B. A. (Eds.) (1986). Collected works. New York: PMP Publications. If youre citing an entire edited volume like this, make sure to give the editors name in your in-text citations. Edited Volumes with a Single Author When referencing an edited collection of writing by one author, such as a poetry anthology, the authorââ¬â¢s name should be used for the primary reference and the editorââ¬â¢s name should be included after the title: Wordsmith, A. (1974). Wordsmith: A collection. A. N. Editor (Ed.). New York: PMP Publications. The in-text citations accompanying this reference would then use the authorââ¬â¢s name: To quote one poet (Wordsmith, 2013), ââ¬Å"Poetry is more than just rhymingâ⬠(p. 12).

Significance of the Watergate Scandal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Significance of the Watergate Scandal - Essay Example When it was later found out that the people were under the presidentââ¬â¢s payroll, the case led to his indictment. This was after running for re-election, in 1972, and winning. This paper will review the significance of this event, and some of the changes that followed in the U.S. policies after this event. It is true that this event shaped the countryââ¬â¢s law after it erupted. Those involved were either directly or indirectly in the committee that was campaigning to re-elect the president. After all these events and the eventual resignation of the president, some changes in the laws were evident (Henretta and Jonathon 2009, 859). One of the changes that became clear to the people was the fact, ââ¬Å"politicians could no longer be trusted.â⬠This is what led to the election of a rather unknown party to be president. This was in the year 1977, when Jimmy Carter became president of the United States. The scandal gave the American people disillusionment about their govern ment. ââ¬Å"It was during this period that people started having different thoughts about the war in Vietnam.â⬠The presidentââ¬â¢s powers had to be curtailed due to the above reasons. They were curtailed in the sense that, the president had limited powers, especially when it came to matters concerning the stateââ¬â¢s money, the deployment of troops to war, and the freedom to information. The National Congress was responsible for this move which was largely appreciated by the people in the United States. ââ¬Å"The War Powers Act, reining on the presidentââ¬â¢s powers to deploy U.S. forces without congressional approval.â⬠During this move, there was evidence that proved one thing; no one is above the law, not even the president. During the curtailing of the presidentââ¬â¢s powers, the freedom of the press got a new meaning (Henretta and Jonathon 2009, 860). All this was in the first amendment, in the constitution. If it is true, then, ââ¬Å"it is the pressâ â¬â¢s responsibility to print it regardless of the position or power of those involved.â⬠In another area, the Freedom of the Information Act became stronger. This meant, ââ¬Å"People could now get access to government documents that are accessible to the public.â⬠If the people of the state feel like they need to get information about some of the governmentââ¬â¢s activities, then it is possible to get documents with information (Henretta and Jonathon 2009, 860). These documents can let them know about what the government is about to do. If they happen to, ââ¬Å"agree or disagree with any of their activities, it is their fundamental right to do so.â⬠To date, government related documents are located online (Biagi 2011, 97). The internet can allow anyone, and everyone in the world to access government related documents. This is in order to find out what the powerful nation is doing, and if it is legal under the constitution. Through this event, the constitutionà ¢â¬â¢s and peopleââ¬â¢s belief in the system was affirmed. ââ¬Å"The belief of equality and justice became a reality to many.â⬠It became evident even to the highest office in the land, that is, the presidentââ¬â¢s office. The people in the scandal got to understand the full extent of the law. It was while in office that the president operated on a level one would consider full of arrogance (Henretta and Jonathon 2009, 860). However, as the law demanded that they pay the price for their actions, they could no longer ignore the fact, ââ¬Å"they were not above the law.ââ¬

The Benevolent Benjamin Franklin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Benevolent Benjamin Franklin - Essay Example Franklin had to learn at an early age to become an independent studier of academics, since books were quite rare and very expensive in this period in history, thus setting the foundation for his motivational prowess found later in life. Because of the aforementioned experiences, and many other exposures to diverse citizens in domestic and international society, Franklin began to understand the importance of virtue, character, integrity and the pursuit of securing the common welfare. Franklin eventually evolved into a highly-benevolent statesman who genuinely believed in the construction of ethical philosophy and the social promotion of self-improvement to better personal character. THE JOURNEY TOWARD SELF-IMPROVEMENT In Franklinââ¬â¢s autobiography, he continuously refers to situations that occurred throughout his lifetime that lay the foundation for his views on self-improvement, with considerable emphasis about the importance of divinity in establishing this principle. In 1756, Franklin was commissioned to take a leadership role in the construction of fortified structures for the military to ensure protection against growing Indian enemy threat. During these months, involving very difficult labor, Franklin witnessed what he referred to as ââ¬Å"contemptibleâ⬠management policy for workers (Eliot, 140), who had been charged with using axes and shovels to dig trenches and process lumber for fort construction. Franklin found that when men were gainfully employed, they were more jovial and willing to comply with management and laboring direction. During periods where there was limited work available, these same laborers would argue and complain due to these frustrations. The leadership of the fortification construction projects, rather than recognize laborer needs, would simply provide them with trivial grunt work as a means of satisfying the ongoing complaints. Through these observations, Franklin began to recognize the foundations of human nature and e ffective management which is more in-line with contemporary leadership philosophy about establishing relationships and providing satisfaction to laborers to improve productivity and commitment. Franklin seemed to recognize the imperative of searching for opportunities for self-improvement in terms of providing for the social and tangible welfare of others through these experiences. During this construction phase in Franklinââ¬â¢s life, he provides an example of where these realizations became apparent when discussing a lack of commitment by the aforementioned laborers for attending prayer services. Franklin offers to the project chaplain regarding the use of rum provisions as an incentive for regular and timely attendance of these services: "It is, perhaps, below the dignity of your profession to act as steward of the rum, but if you were to deal it out and only just after prayers, you would have them all about you." (Eliot, 141). Franklin believed that the volume of promises for incentive-based alcohol was not meeting with expected results for prayer attendance, since men inherently have gluttonous attitudes (this was apparent during periods where laborers were argumentative and dissatisfied). Franklin recognized that men required seeking self-improvement and that it is not always beneficial to provide abundance until the individual has sought emotional intelligence and self-reflection to monitor and control behaviors. Even though Franklin

Race and Ethnicity Essay Example for Free
Race and Ethnicity Essay Stereotypes have existed in a very long time, and almost everyone has stereotyped a person or has been considered as belonging to a particular group of stereotypes. But what is a stereotype actually? Stereotyping is a way to group races or individuals together and make a judgment about them, without even knowing them. Itââ¬â¢s a belief about a certain social group or type of individuals. Stereotypes can be positive, however stereotypes are most often associated with negativity. Stereotypes often exist about cultures and countries as a whole, and it makes it easier to define a country or race, if you put them in specific groups. Almost every country or race has a stereotype. There exist infinitely many different stereotypes. As said before, they exist based groups and race, but also on gender and age. There are common stereotypes, which is about and between the cultures. Some common stereotype examples are, that all Asians have high IQs or black people are always connected to crime and violence. Itââ¬â¢s grouping the race together saying that every Asian person is smart and every black person is criminal. Another type of stereotyping is the individual, which is about skaters, emos, gangsters and so on. Emos are stereotyped as being depressed people, who listen to sad music and cut themselves. Individual stereotypes are most between teenagers and in the schools, because younger people want to make one group or person superior and above another group or person. Stereotypes are not just about different races and backgrounds however. Gender and ago stereotypes also exist in our society. For example, if you say that men are better than women, youââ¬â¢re stereotyping all men and all women. The invention of stereotypes has come naturally though time. When we see persons we donââ¬â¢t know, we automatically begin to put them in different groups in our head. It makes us believe we actually know them better or know what type of persons they are. An example can be a person from the Middle East, because many people often connect them with only troubles and thefts. In that way we personally feel more safety, because then we might say to ourselves that we have to take care and be more careful about what to say so there wonââ¬â¢t be any problems. On the other hand our thoughts about stereotypes arenââ¬â¢t always negative. We say that Italian are great cooks and make delicious food, which is a positive stereotype about Italy. ThereforeIda Jessen og Rikke Hemmingsen HH1C Silkeborg Handelsgymnasiet arenââ¬â¢t stereotypes the same as prejudices. Stereotypes are often exaggerated and funny and prejudices are only negative opinions about people and things. Stereotypes always appear negative in the medias. Again weââ¬â¢re comparing with the people from the Middle East. When there has been a crime and theyââ¬â¢re talking about it in the medias, it has always been told loud and clear if itââ¬â¢s immigrates who had make a crime. On the other hand when itââ¬â¢s a local person, it has never been told. Therefore we actually compare stereotypes with only bad things, because thatââ¬â¢s how it has been appeared in the medias and it affects us, but stereotypes are often fun.

American Society Needs Affirmative Action Essay examples -- argumentat
American Society Needs Affirmative Action à à à à à à Affirmative action has been the subject of increasing debate and tension in American society. However, the debate over affirmative action has become ensnared in rhetoric that pits equality of opportunity against the equality of results. The debate has been more emotional than intellectual, and has generated more tension than shed light on the issue. Participants in the debate have over examined the ethical and moral issues that affirmative action raises while forgetting to scrutinize the system that has created the need for them. Too often, affirmative action is looked upon as the panacea for a nation once ill with, but now cured of, the virulent disease of racial discrimination. Affirmative action is, and should be seen as, a temporary, partial, and perhaps even flawed remedy for past and continuing discrimination against historically marginalized and disenfranchised groups in American society. Working as it should, it affords groups greater equality of opportunity in a social context marked by substantial inequalities and structural forces that impede a fair assessment of their capabilities. In this essay I will expose what I see as the shortcomings of the current ethical attacks on affirmative action (1), the main one being, that these attacks are devoid of proper historical context and shrouded in white male hegemony and privilege. Then, I will discuss the moral and ethical issues raised by continuing to function within a system that systematically disadvantages historically marginalized groups. With that as a backdrop, I will make a positive case for continuing affirmative action programs and discuss the practic... ...ainly valid, qualifications to the table that are not recognized under our current system of merit. Notes: 1. While it is true that Affirmative action programs address the concerns of a wide range of Americans who confront discrimination, the debate is often understood to be about race; and specifically Black Americans. For that reason the emphasis of my essay will be on affirmative action programs that involve Black Americans. 2. Since I have narrowed my discussion of Affirmative action to that bestowed to a specific racial group, it is imperative that I give my understanding of what "race" is. I am writing this essay with the understanding that race is not an immutable biological category or characteristic but rather a social construction. In America, race was constructed and employed to preserve white privilege while simultaneously oppressing Blacks.

The results were positive, but still a quarter of the people that are treated by antipsychotic drugs have no response to them. Also there are theories about effect of environmental factors on development of the disorder. Such theory might say that Schizophrenia may develop from physical damage to the brain or disruption of normal brain development early in fetal or prenatal periods. (Understanding Abnormal Behavior, p. 435-449) John Nash showed mostly just positive symptoms of Schizophrenia. And since he had Paranoid Schizophrenia it was easy to distinguish these symptoms.
